Eight members of a Christian family have been repeatedly monitored, arrested, and sentenced to prison.
Fang Jun’s family, as well as families of his three siblings, are members of a Christian house church in Benxi city of Liaoning Province. Throughout ten years, they have been repeatedly persecuted by the Chinese Communist Party and forced to hide every time one of them was arrested. To date, Fang Jun’s daughter and son-in-law are still serving sentences in prison.
In August 2006, Fang Jun, his wife, and daughter along with her husband as well as his two younger sisters were arrested by the police because of their faith. More than 20 other members of the congregation were detained as well. Fang Jun was released the following day, and his wife was held in captivity for 15 days. His daughter, son-in-law, and one of two sisters were accused of “disturbing public order” and sentenced to two years of re-education through labor.
Afterward, the police started monitoring the whereabouts of Fang Jun and his wife, Liu Hui. Even a table for mahjong game had been installed outside their house so that informers from the local community would observe their movements and report on them while pretending to play.
Two weeks later, the police once again detained Liu Hui for 15 days; she was arrested five times in the following years.
Late at night on October 28, 2015, Fang Jun’s daughter and son-in-law, as well as his brother and sister-in-law, were arrested again. In May 2017, the daughter and her husband were sentenced to three and three and a half years in prison, respectively, after being illegally detained for one and a half years. They are still serving their sentences in Liaoning’s Shenyang city.
