[Introduction] In May 2023, the International Human Rights Committee (IHRC), a non-profit and non-governmental organization focusing on freedom of religion or belief (FoRB) based in London, led a fact-finding mission in Bagladesh to verify what really happened in the north of the country in early March 2023. On March 3, Jahid Hasan, a young Ahmadi Muslim man, reportedly around 25 years of age, was beaten to death in the village of Ahmednagar, Panchagarh district, Rangpur division, Bangladesh (not to be confused with the city of Ahmednagar, Ahmednagar district, state of Maharashtra, Western India). The crime was perpetrated during a militarily-performed attack, as the mission found, by Muslim fanatics who hate Ahmadis, labeling them as “heretics.” Marco Respinti, Director-in-Charge of “Bitter Winter,” was part of the professionals (lawyers, activists, journalists) included in the visiting delegation. Reports on the mission will be published, also in “Bitter Winter,” when all details and information will be collected and aptly put into context. In Ahmednagar, Respinti collected an unpublished poem that a local young university student wrote for the community. It is published here with the permission of the author, in both Bangla and English.

The Poem in Bangla

The Poem in English

“Spreading Love”

In a world where hatred reigns,
Our faith is targeted with disdain.
Discriminated and despised,
Our only crime is to believe and strive.
Our mosques are burned, our homes destroyed,
Our children traumatized and our community voided.
But we stand with pride and we stand with love,
For our faith teaches us to rise above.
The world may see us as different,
But our humanity is the same, our hearts persistent.
We strive for peace, we strive for harmony,
For a world where love is the only testimony.
So let us speak out against persecution and hate,
And let our love for humanity be our ultimate fate.
For the Ahmadiyya community, a people of faith and peace,
Deserves our support and our love to never cease.
