Three Christians From the Same Family Arrested and Imprisoned, One Remain in Custody

Source: Direct Reports from China
Date: June 30, 2018

The Chinese Communist Party police arrested three Christians from the same family in Tianfan town, Poyang County, Jiangxi Province, in 2015. The daughter is still in custody. Christian Fan Ling’s son, daughter and daughter-in-law were arrested while in a church gathering with 13 other Christians on September 28, 2015. Officers from the Ruichang County Jiujiang city police station surrounded the gathering place, broke inside, and took everyone into custody, accusing them of “fraternizing with foreigners” because they had accepted the gospel from foreign countries.

Fan Ling’s daughter-in-law were sentenced to two years and were released in September 2017, after serving her full sentences. Fan Ling’s 25-year-old son was sentenced to three years, and her 27-yearold daughter was sentenced to three and a half years and still has not been released. There is no information about the fate of the other 13 Christians arrested along with Fan Ling’s family. Fan Ling was previously arrested by the Tianfan town police for her belief in God in October 2012 and was imprisoned for one year.

Bitter Winter

Bitter Winter reports on how religions are allowed, or not allowed, to operate in China and how some are severely persecuted after they are labeled as “xie jiao,” or heterodox teachings. We publish news difficult to find elsewhere, analyses, and debates.
Placed under the editorship of Massimo Introvigne, one of the most well-known scholars of religion internationally, “Bitter Winter” is a cooperative enterprise by scholars, human rights activists, and members of religious organizations persecuted in China (some of them have elected, for obvious reasons, to remain anonymous).
