(看守所). A facility where those the police considers as guilty of a violation of the Criminal Code are kept pending investigation of their crime. People sentenced to short-term imprisonment can also be held there, as well as those sentenced to criminal detention — the less punitive of the two types of incarceration that exist under Chinese law (the other is imprisonment), usually lasting from one to six months.
