Mother-Son Duo Arrested For Religious Belief

Authorities detained a Mother and her son from Inner Mongolia on two separate occasions and later sentenced both of them for five years.

In 2015, the Chinese authorities apprehended a youth in Alxa Right Banner area of China’s Inner Mongolia.The man was arrested for being a member of The Church of Almighty God, a Chinese Christian new religious movement,which is listed as a xie jiao by the authorities.

Xie jiao refers to heterodox teaching in China and association with one is punishable under Article 300 of the Chinese Criminal Code. The youth was sentenced to five years in prison as a result. Through him, the authorities also came upon a list of other believers, which included his mother, Erdenetuya.

For the past three years, police had been planting informers to follow her and posting her personal details on various WeChat groups to get information via public tip-offs.

In May this year, the 63-year-old Erdenetuya was arrested and given a five-year prison sentence, like her son.
