The authorities in a Henan Province’s city were unable to demolish a church, following protests by believers.
In April 2018, local authorities in Yanshi city of Henan Province made two attempts at demolishing a state-approved Protestant Three-Self Church but failed both times.
The walls outside the church in Dong village were felled by a bulldozer, but the rest of it remains mostly intact. Mr. Wang, the local party secretary, scolded the believers present saying, “The government is carrying out a rectification of Christianity. Your church must come down. In the future, only patriotism is allowed, not religion.”
However, when the believers lied down in front of bulldozers and climbed up the Christian Cross, the secretary had no option but to relent once again. While the church has been left alone for now, the risk of demolition still looms large. In recent months, there have been many reports of Christian Crosses being torn down at many state-approved churches.
