On September 2, 2018, a university student from Henan Province was detained at the Shanghai Pudong Airport preparing to board a plane to South Korea where she studies.
On August 20, 2018, two Public Security Bureau officers in Henan’s Luoyang city drove to the home of Liu Hui (pseudonym) who studied in South Korea to inquire about her belief in Almighty God. Since she was in Shanghai at the time, the officers left but made multiple calls in the following days demanding that Liu Hui’s father went with them to Shanghai to find her, threatening that if they could not meet her in person, she would be unable to return to South Korea. The officers deceived Liu Hui’s father that they only wanted to meet Liu Hui to advise her to leave The Church of Almighty God if she had joined it while in South Korea.
On August 30, unaware of their true intentions, Liu Hui’s father agreed to go with five officers from Luoyang’s Public Security Bureau and the National Security Brigade to Shanghai to look for his daughter.
The next day in Shanghai, the officers forcibly kept Liu Hui’s father at a hotel so that he would not be able to contact her on his own. That afternoon, the Luoyang officers together with their colleagues from Shanghai’s National Security Brigade waited for Liu Hui at the Shanghai Pudong Airport to arrest her but were unsuccessful. They managed to detain her on the morning of September 2 as she was preparing to board a plane to return to her studies in South Korea, and no news about her have been received since.
