A woman suffered constant physical and mental abuse while in prison for her belief in God.
In May 2018, the police in Jiangxi Province’s Jiujiang city arrested a woman, Aizhen (pseudonym) for her Christian belief. The officers also snatched away her phone and confiscated her scooter, computer, and her jewelry worth 7,800 RMB or over 1000 USD.
During her interrogation, she was questioned without rest or sleep. She was not allowed to eat or drink either. When she refused to sign a statement saying she does not believe in God, she was hit on the face with leather shoes repeatedly. But it was in prison where she went through the worst abuse imaginable in just one month.
In prison, the disciplinary guards would tie her up to a pole used for drying clothes under the scorching sun. Guards would then beat her with plastic sticks and books all over her body.
Another method used was to tie her up or pin her down in a bathroom. Again, she was beaten all over her body until she was numb and could not walk. In one incident, they slapped her thighs with a plastic comb until her skin became blue. Other prisoners too were encouraged to visit the bathroom and subject her through severe mental and physical torture.
At night, the guards would arrange for prisoners to sleep next to her and pinch her all over, preventing her from sleeping and causing her severe distress at the same time. They would also put insects over her so they would crawl and bite her all the time. During the day, she was made to remove clothing from her torso and sit naked in the main hall while everything was filmed on surveillance cameras.
Aizhen was released on June 10, and to date, has not signed any statement denying God. However, her abuse has left her damaged, and she cannot extend her left arm straight.
Pastor Zhou Songlin and Elder Ding Zhongfu are still detained, while their co-workers Mao Junma, Pei Defei, and Yang Peiyun were released on bail. All should face charges of fraud.
