Tongshan County CCP creatively “put together celebration and anti-xie-jiao education,” as the local Party Secretary said.

The Western New Year is not the Chinese New Year but celebrations are now becoming popular in various parts of China. It is an opportunity for fireworks, and Chinese look for creative schemes to join the rest of the world in celebrating this non-Chinese holiday.
In Tongshan County, Hubei, which is under the administration of the prefecture-level city of Xianning, the CCP invented its own original way of celebrating January 1, 2025. It organized a festive gathering to incite citizens to fight “xie jiao” (banned organizations promoting “heterodox teachings,” sometimes less correctly translated as “evil cults”) and “illegal religion,” and promote “science.”
On January 1, a crowded Fengchi Square in Tonyang Town, Tongshan County hosted an “educational performance” organized by the Tongyang Town CCP Committee, the Tongyang Town People’s Government, and the Tongshan County Anti-Xie-Jiao Association.
Before the performance, Ruan Yingyou, Secretary of the Tongyang Town CCP Committee, expressed gratitude to leaders, community members, and residents for supporting the “good fight.”

He emphasized that combating “xie jiao and illegal religion” is everyone’s responsibility and called for building awareness through education, strengthening publicity, and enforcing laws to eliminate unauthorized religious activities. “These involved in these illegal activities should now they have nowhere to hide,” Ruan said.
A song and dance program featuring the show “Police and Citizens Join Hands to Fight Frauds” told citizens that they should immediately report to the police any suspicious religious activity. They may even receive a reward.
As Ruan said, the CCP managed to blend “anti-xie-jiao education and celebration.” Similar events may be repeated elsewhere in other festive occasions.
